Wire Monkeys

The Urban Dictionary defines “wire monkey” as blue-collar slang for a MIG welder. However, in the Broadcast, Commercial/Residential A/V, and Entertainment industries, it refers to a technician specialized in the installation and wiring of audio, video, network, and control systems. These professionals play a crucial role in ensuring that complex systems function seamlessly, delivering high-quality audiovisual experiences to audiences. In a well-planned project, they are often involved in the early stages of project planning. They work closely with system designers, engineers, and project managers to understand the requirements and specifications of the audiovisual systems to be installed. This includes reviewing blueprints, schematics, and technical documents to set schedules and plan the layout and wiring paths effectively.

Once the planning stage is complete, they will proceed with prepping the environment that will contain the physical installation of the audio, video, networking, and control systems. An environment that can be infinitely diverse and full of perils. From a room in a building to one in a cruise ship or a space in a 40 ft. container or the back of a van. A room with a raised floor 1 to 4 ft. between the floor and the tiles. Or a floor where the racks have to go directly on it with no space to run the wires. Once the environment has been studied, the equipment racks need to be installed on the floor and tied to each other away from the walls according to code. These considerations will decide how the wire will be run (over or under the racks), if trays to support the wire will be needed, and how long the wires need to be.

The wiring aspect of a wire monkey’s job is perhaps the most critical. They are responsible for measuring the distance between each source and each destination. These days the CAD software will extrude that data from the design drawings and create a “cut sheet” or a “run list”. This list will contain the detailed definition of each segment of wire connecting a source (output) to a destination (input), name and location of the unit, connectors to be used, signal type, cable type, color, length, and a different number for each segment. Some of this information will be printed on a label for each end of each segment to properly give each cable its own identity. Once this is done, they have to be run from the source location to the destination. This can be from rack to rack, room to room, or building to building through walls, ceilings, and floors. Lots o’ fun.

Wire monkeys often work with diverse equipment from many different manufacturers, requiring them to have a broad understanding of audiovisual technologies and protocols. They integrate various devices such as cameras, microphones, mixers, switchers, and control systems to create cohesive and interconnected audiovisual environments. A system like this is comparable to a Human body that has 13 different systems working at the same time controlled by one biological unit at the top and connected all over by biological wire. Once the installation and wiring are complete, we conduct thorough testing to ensure that all components are functioning correctly and meeting performance standards. Any issues that are discovered related to connectivity, signal quality, or compatibility get troubleshot, diagnosed, and corrected.

We maintain detailed documentation of the installed systems, including wiring diagrams, equipment lists, and configuration settings. This documentation is essential for future reference, system upgrades, or troubleshooting and maintenance efforts. Wire monkeys adhere to industry standards and regulations regarding electrical wiring, equipment installation, and workplace safety. They take precautions to prevent accidents, such as using proper safety gear, following established procedures, and ensuring compliance with relevant codes and guidelines.

Broadcast Engineering: Knowledge of broadcast standards, signal flow, and equipment specifications is crucial. This includes understanding video and audio codecs, compression techniques, transmission protocols, and studio equipment.

As you can see, a well-trained Wire Monkey can be an important source of technological expertise as well as a deeply useful professional resource in any field that involves Audio, Video, Network, and Control.
